This is what makes BSNL's Rs 1.34 lakh satellite phone unique

BSNL has introduced a new satellite phone in India aimed at ensuring connectivity in areas where mobile network coverage is unavailable. The state-run telecom operator has priced the device at Rs 1,34,166, inclusive of taxes. Unlike conventional smartphones that depend on cellular towers, the satellite phone connects directly to satellites, making it suitable for use in remote and off-grid locations.

The company is positioning the device as a communication solution for regions beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks. However, it is not available for unrestricted public use. In India, satellite phones are subject to strict regulations, and users must obtain prior authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before purchasing or operating the device.

How the BSNL satellite phone works

Unlike regular mobile phones that rely on nearby telecom towers, the BSNL satellite phone communicates directly with satellites. This enables users to make voice calls even in locations where there is no cellular coverage, making it particularly useful during emergencies or in remote areas lacking telecom infrastructure.

BSNL said the handset has been developed in collaboration with global satellite communication providers, including Inmarsat, allowing satellite-based connectivity across isolated regions.

Key features

According to BSNL, the satellite phone offers several features designed for critical communication needs:

  • Satellite connectivity in areas without mobile network coverage

  • Voice calling from remote locations

  • SOS emergency support for distress situations

  • Long battery life for extended operation away from charging facilities

  • Rugged and durable construction suitable for harsh environments

Who can use it?

The satellite phone is not intended for regular smartphone users. Instead, BSNL has developed it for individuals and organisations that require dependable communication in areas where conventional mobile services are unavailable. Potential users include personnel in defence, maritime operations, disaster management, mining, remote industrial projects, as well as pilgrims travelling through isolated regions and adventure travellers.

Price and availability

The BSNL satellite phone is priced at Rs 1,34,166 and is intended primarily for mission-critical communication.

The company has clarified that individuals and organisations must secure approval from the Department of Telecommunications before purchasing or using the device. Owning or operating a satellite phone without the required authorisation may attract legal action under Indian regulations.

Those seeking additional information can visit their nearest BSNL office or contact the telecom operator on 9768866652.

The launch comes as BSNL continues to strengthen its terrestrial mobile network across the country. The company recently announced that it has commissioned nearly 99,000 4G sites as part of its nationwide rollout, while the government is also considering allowing the operator to deploy additional 4G infrastructure across India.
