US President Donald Trump has proposed replacing immigrant truck drivers with American military veterans, alleging that many immigrant drivers are undocumented, lack proper licences, and are responsible for numerous road accidents. Speaking at a military investment summit in Pennsylvania, Trump said his administration would soon take action against what he described as "illegal alien truck drivers" and instead train veterans for trucking jobs.
Trump also announced that military personnel with experience driving heavy vehicles would automatically qualify for commercial driver's licences, although he did not provide further details on how the proposal would be implemented.
WHY IMMIGRANTS DOMINATE THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY
The proposal comes amid the Trump administration's broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the trucking sector. Earlier this year, around 200,000 immigrant drivers reportedly lost their work authorisations and licences.
Trucking has become a popular profession among immigrants due to a shortage of American drivers and the opportunity to earn stable incomes soon after arriving in the US.
IMPACT ON INDIAN TRUCKERS
If implemented, the proposal could significantly affect Indian truck drivers, particularly those from Punjab and Haryana, who form a large part of the US trucking workforce. Industry estimates suggest there are around 130,000 to 150,000 Indian truckers in the country.
The community has already been impacted by stricter immigration policies, including mandatory English proficiency requirements and recent licensing restrictions.
Indian truckers have also faced increased scrutiny following several high-profile accidents and drug-smuggling cases involving drivers of Indian origin in recent years.
Although the proposal is yet to be implemented, it signals that immigrant truckers, including thousands of Indians, are likely to remain under increased scrutiny as part of the Trump administration's immigration policies.
