For almost a year, Karur has remained one of the most defining and challenging chapters of Vijay's political career—from his emergence as a first-time politician to becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The district, which witnessed the deadliest tragedy of his election campaign, welcomed him once again on Friday. This time, however, he returned not as an opposition leader seeking public support but as the state's Chief Minister, fulfilling a promise he had made to the families affected by the tragedy. Dressed in black as a mark of mourning and respect, Vijay visited Karur to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
The stampede during Vijay's election rally in September 2025 claimed 41 lives and left 110 others injured. For any political newcomer, such a tragedy could have derailed an entire campaign. Yet, Vijay managed to navigate the crisis while balancing political responsibility with empathy.
The loss of so many lives, coupled with criticism that his delayed arrival contributed to the incident, left grieving families seeking compassion and reassurance. Against that backdrop, Vijay's first visit to Karur since the tragedy carries considerable emotional and political significance.

THE STAMPEDE DURING VIJAY'S KARUR RALLY
The tragedy unfolded on September 21, 2025, when a massive crowd gathered for Vijay's election campaign rally in Karur. Although TVK organisers had informed authorities that around 15,000 people were expected, the actual turnout far exceeded those estimates as supporters flocked to see the actor-turned-politician.
More than 5,000 supporters had travelled from Namakkal, where Vijay had addressed another rally earlier in the day, resulting in attendance far beyond the venue's capacity.
The situation became more difficult when Vijay reached the venue nearly six hours behind schedule. As thousands waited under the scorching sun, several people reportedly fainted due to dehydration before the programme even began.
Supporters climbed trees, compound walls and nearby structures in an attempt to catch a glimpse of Vijay. When several of these makeshift viewing points collapsed, panic spread rapidly and escalated into a deadly stampede. By the end of the incident, 41 people had died while nearly 110 others sustained injuries.
The tragedy immediately triggered intense criticism of Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Political rivals and observers argued that the incident resulted from poor planning, inadequate crowd management and the organisers' failure to provide essential facilities, including drinking water, despite the overwhelming turnout.
Vijay's delayed arrival became a major point of criticism, with opponents alleging that the prolonged wait significantly worsened the situation.
CRITICISM OF VIJAY'S LEADERSHIP
Political analyst Ramu Manivannan questioned both Vijay's political preparedness and his handling of the crisis.
"Time and again, he has shown himself to be without a concrete plan, clear vision or any real commitment. Yes, he is a mega star, but that does not make him a mass politician or a true leader of the people. What we are witnessing is someone leveraging his cinematic fame for political advantage, without any grounding in public ethics or responsibility," he told India Today Magazine in 2025.
The criticism intensified after Vijay left for Chennai on a chartered flight from Tiruchirappalli while the death toll was still being compiled. Several critics described his departure as insensitive.
"A man who runs from crises and avoids facing difficult situations cannot be expected to govern effectively. Admiration on the screen does not translate to governance in the streets," Manivannan added.
Vijay chose not to interact with journalists either at the airport or after reaching Chennai, instead issuing a condolence message through social media. He announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 2 lakh for those who were injured.
The incident also led to legal consequences, with police registering criminal cases against several senior TVK leaders.
HOW VIJAY RESPONDED
The Karur stampede eventually became a turning point in Vijay's political approach.
A few days after the incident, he released an emotional video statement, saying that "all the truths will come out soon" while describing the tragedy as the most painful experience of his life.
"I have never faced such a painful situation in my life. My heart is filled with pain, only pain," Vijay said in the five-minute video.
Rather than immediately revisiting Karur, he reached out privately to the affected families through video calls, assuring them of continued support. According to party sources, the tragedy also prompted significant internal changes within TVK.
The party considerably reduced the scale of Vijay's public rallies, introduced stricter crowd management measures and became far more cautious while organising large campaign events during the remainder of the election.
RETURNING TO KARUR AS CHIEF MINISTER
Nearly a year later, Tamil Nadu's political landscape has changed dramatically. Vijay now returns to Karur not as an opposition leader defending his party but as the Chief Minister of the state.
His visit combines both symbolic and administrative significance. Besides laying the foundation stone for Evervan Kothari Footwear Private Limited's Rs 1,700-crore manufacturing project at Manavasi near Krishnarayapuram, Vijay will distribute compassionate appointment letters to 32 members of families who lost relatives in the stampede. They will be appointed to various government departments based on their educational qualifications.
"I live with the pain of losing my brothers and sisters, and the DMK is still blaming me, saying that I went into hiding. They kept asking me if I would speak anything. But did the police provide security commensurate with the crowd that had assembled in Karur that day?" Vijay said while addressing the gathering.
Vimal, who lost his one-and-a-half-year-old son Dhruvan in the stampede and is among those receiving a government job, said, "I believe providing me with the job is the right and positive thing to do."
For many of the bereaved families, however, the visit carries meaning beyond the official announcements. In the months following the tragedy, Vijay had promised that he would personally return to Karur to meet them. Supporters now view his first visit as Chief Minister as the fulfilment of that promise—a moment they describe as their leader honouring his commitment.
