You can now use your iPad as your primary device with WhatsApp

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out an update for iPad users that allows them to register an account directly on the tablet, removing the need to link it to an iPhone or Android device through companion mode. Previously, iPads could only function as secondary devices, with limitations such as no live location sharing, broadcast lists or business Flows, and would log out if the primary phone remained inactive for 14 days.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is available with WhatsApp for iPadOS version 26.25.74 and is being rolled out gradually. Users can set up WhatsApp on the iPad using their phone number and a verification code or a passkey. Once configured as the primary device, all companion mode restrictions are removed. However, WhatsApp will continue supporting companion mode, allowing users to choose whether they want their iPad to be a primary or secondary device.
