After four years, Serena and Venus Williams will make a doubles comeback

Serena Williams and Venus Williams are set to reunite on the doubles court after four years, having received a wildcard entry for the Cincinnati Open later this month.

Tournament organisers confirmed on Monday that the legendary sisters will compete together in the women's doubles event, marking their first appearance as a pair since the 2022 US Open.

Wimbledon comeback was cut short

Their return comes weeks after a planned reunion at Wimbledon was cancelled. The Williams sisters had accepted a wildcard for the Championships, but Serena was forced to withdraw after suffering a knee injury during her first-round singles match against Australia's Maya Joint.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion later revealed that doctors had drained fluid from her knee and said she was "heartbroken" to miss the chance to play alongside her sister once again.

"I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn't ready to compete," Serena wrote in an Instagram post after pulling out of the Wimbledon doubles event.

Despite the disappointment, Serena hinted that her comeback was only postponed, ending her message by telling fans to "stay tuned to a city near you."

The Cincinnati Open will now provide that opportunity.

The Williams sisters are regarded as one of the greatest doubles partnerships in tennis history. Together, they have won 14 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, including six Wimbledon crowns, as well as three Olympic gold medals.

Their most recent doubles appearance came at the 2022 US Open, where they were defeated in the opening round by Czech duo Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.

Venus, 46, has also received a wildcard entry into the singles draw at the Cincinnati Open, which will be held from August 11 to 23. Serena's name has not been included in the singles field, with the 44-year-old currently set to compete only in the doubles event.
