Ajinkya Rahane is set to embark on a new phase of his cricket career, moving from the field to the commentary box after retiring from all forms of cricket. The former India captain will make his Test commentary debut with Sony Sports Network during India’s two-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning August 15.
Sony Sports welcomed Rahane to its commentary panel on social media, saying, “The magic hasn't stopped, it's just found a new home!” The broadcaster also wrote, “Welcome aboard Extraaa Innings, Jinks!”
Rahane’s commentary debut comes soon after he announced his retirement on July 30. The 38-year-old ended a career spanning 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is for India. In Test cricket, he accumulated 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries.
RAHANE TO CONTINUE PLAYING IN EUROPEAN T20 PREMIER LEAGUE
Although Rahane has retired from professional cricket, he will remain involved with the sport. He has signed with Amsterdam Flames as their marquee player for the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which will be held from August 26 to September 20.
Rahane’s international career was particularly notable for his calmness and performances in pressure situations. His biggest achievement as captain came during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, when he led the team to a 2-1 series win after the side was dismissed for 36 in the opening Test. Rahane responded with a century in the Melbourne Test as India staged a remarkable comeback.
His final Test appearance for India came in July 2023, while he had not played for the national white-ball teams since 2018. He chose to retire after deciding that it was time to move on from international cricket and the game in its entirety.
Rahane also played for six IPL franchises, with Kolkata Knight Riders being his final team. Having now ended his playing career, he is set to take more than a decade of international experience into his new role behind the microphone.
