Prashanth Neel begins pre-production on Prabhas' movie Salaar 2

Pre-production for Prabhas’ much-awaited sequel to Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire has officially begun. A source close to the project told India Today that director Prashanth Neel and Hombale Films producer Vijay Kiragandur have reunited to begin work on the tentatively titled Salaar 2: Shouryaanga Parvam.

“The two recently had a meeting to chalk out the schedules and also lock the final script. The makers are aiming to deliver an unprecedented cinematic spectacle that exceeds massive fan expectations,” the source said, while sharing an exclusive photo from the meeting between the filmmaker and producer.

The update comes months after uncertainty surrounding the sequel. In January, the makers dismissed speculation that Salaar 2 had been shelved by sharing a behind-the-scenes picture featuring Prabhas and Shruti Haasan. Neel also confirmed in May that he would return to the Salaar franchise after wrapping up Dragon, his upcoming film with Jr NTR.

The sequel’s scale has been a major talking point since the first film concluded. Producer Vijay Kiragandur had previously called Salaar 2 an “absolute behemoth”, fuelling expectations around its action, world-building and overall scale.

All about Salaar: Part 1

The sequel will continue the story established in the first instalment, which released in December 2023 and centred on the intense friendship between Deva (Prabhas) and Varadha Raja Mannar (Prithviraj Sukumaran). Set in the fictional kingdom of Khansaar, the film explored their complicated relationship against the backdrop of a violent struggle for power.

Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire ended with a major revelation that set up the sequel’s larger conflict. Deva was revealed to belong to the Shouryaanga tribe and to be the rightful heir to Khansaar’s throne. Varadha, meanwhile, declared Deva as his Salaar, but Deva’s lineage threatened to dramatically change their relationship.

The first film had already placed the childhood friends on opposing sides of Khansaar’s power struggle, and the sequel is expected to explore their bond, loyalty and betrayal in greater depth.

Prabhas and Prithviraj are expected to return as Deva and Varadha, while Shruti Haasan, Sriya Reddy and Jagapathi Babu are also likely to reprise their roles. The first film additionally featured Bobby Simha, Tinnu Anand and Garuda Ram.

The makers have yet to announce an official release date for Salaar 2. With Neel currently occupied with Dragon, the immediate priority is to finalise the script and production plans before the sequel advances to its next phase.
