Google’s Gemini has crossed a major milestone, surpassing 1 billion monthly active users and establishing itself as one of the world’s most widely used AI assistants alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the achievement on X, while also hinting at more developments ahead of the Pixel 11 launch.
Pichai said Gemini was the fastest Google product to reach the milestone. “1 billion plus people are now using the Gemini app every month to spark new ideas and get things done,” he wrote, adding that it was Google’s “fastest growing product ever” and its 14th product to surpass 1 billion users.
He also teased upcoming developments, thanking users for being part of Gemini's growth and saying that “much more” was on the way.
Gemini reaches 1 billion users in record time
The Gemini app was launched in early 2024, meaning it took roughly two-and-a-half years to reach 1 billion monthly active users. By comparison, YouTube took around eight years to reach the same milestone, while Gmail took more than a decade.
The figure refers specifically to users of the Gemini app and does not include people accessing Google's AI features through other services. Google's AI Mode in Search, for instance, has separately crossed 1 billion monthly active users worldwide.
Gemini's integration into Google's broader ecosystem, particularly Android smartphones, is likely to have contributed significantly to its rapid growth. Gemini now serves as the default assistant on many Android devices and is integrated with features such as Gemini Live and Circle to Search.
Google also shared details about how users interact with Gemini. More than 63 per cent of users reportedly communicate with the AI assistant through voice, while about one in five Gemini Live interactions also involve camera access or screen sharing.
Users have also generated approximately 150 million images every day through Gemini.
Gemini could get new features with Pixel 11
Google is expected to unveil new Gemini capabilities alongside the Pixel 11 series. Rumours suggest that Gemini could also be integrated with the Pixel Glow light reportedly being introduced on the rear of the Pixel 11 Pro models.
Gemini is not the first AI assistant to reach the 1 billion-user milestone. According to Sensor Tower, ChatGPT crossed the same threshold in June this year.
Google faces growing pressure in AI
Despite Gemini's rapid user growth, Google continues to face intense competition from AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
The company has recently experienced several high-profile departures, including Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, while Demis Hassabis has reportedly stepped back from the day-to-day management of Google DeepMind.
Google has also reportedly delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro after the model failed to meet internal targets for certain tasks, including coding. At the same time, competitors such as Meta and Elon Musk's SpaceXAI have continued developing and launching AI-powered coding tools.
Gemini's 1 billion-user milestone nevertheless highlights the scale Google has achieved in AI, particularly through its ability to distribute the assistant across its existing products and Android ecosystem.
