East Bengal staged a remarkable late comeback to defeat Kuwait's Al Arabi SC 4-1 after extra time at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday, securing their place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two.
The Antonio Lopez Habas-coached side appeared headed for elimination after Anayo Iwuala converted a 76th-minute penalty to put Al Arabi 1-0 ahead. However, Jay Gupta's 90th-minute header forced the match into extra time and completely changed the momentum.
East Bengal, fielding an all-Indian defence in the absence of Spanish centre-back Nacho Monsalve, took control after the restart. Captain Mohammed Rashid put the hosts ahead in the 108th minute with a superb half-volley, before substitute David Lalhlansanga extended the advantage in the 117th minute. Rohit Danu then completed the comeback in stoppage time.
The result sees East Bengal advance to the West Region group stage of Asia's second-tier club competition. The group stage will consist of 16 teams playing home-and-away round-robin fixtures.
East Bengal survive a tense first half
The opening half was played at a high tempo, with neither side showing an intention to sit back.
Al Arabi created the first opportunity in the fifth minute when Zeid Qunbar pulled a shot wide from outside the box. East Bengal responded with pressure of their own, keeping Al Arabi goalkeeper Sulaiman Abdulghafoor busy. He was forced to deal with Basim Rashid's powerful effort before comfortably handling Jesin Thonikkara's curling attempt.
Al Arabi came close to taking the lead in the 23rd minute when Kenean Maleko broke into the penalty area and shot from a tight angle. The ball appeared to have slipped beyond East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill, but he recovered quickly and managed to keep it from crossing the goal line.
Al Arabi take the lead
East Bengal had a major opportunity five minutes after half-time when Bipin Singh missed a clear chance.
Jesin launched a counter-attack and delivered the ball across to Bipin, who had a clear view of the goal. After taking a touch, however, he sent his shot wide.
Al Arabi punished the miss in the 76th minute. Sandip Mandi brought down Maleko inside the box, allowing Iwuala to step up from 12 yards.
The Al Arabi forward sent a powerful low shot into the bottom-left corner. Gill guessed correctly but could not keep the effort out.
The Kuwaiti side almost doubled their lead with 10 minutes of normal time remaining when Yousef Majed met a cross from the left, but his header drifted wide of the far post.
Gupta sparks the comeback
With elimination looming, East Bengal committed players forward in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 90th minute. Rashid delivered a free-kick into the box and Jay Gupta rose to head the ball past Abdulghafoor, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations and forcing extra time.
The equaliser transformed the contest, with East Bengal gaining complete control.
Rashid puts East Bengal ahead
The hosts took the lead in the 108th minute through captain Mohammed Rashid.
A loose ball from the right fell near the edge of the penalty area, and Rashid struck a superb half-volley with his laces to beat the goalkeeper and make it 2-1.
Al Arabi attempted to respond, but East Bengal continued to dominate.
The visitors did have a major opportunity when Zeid Qunbar found himself close to a one-on-one situation with Gill. With the angle narrowing, he squared the ball toward a teammate who appeared to have an open goal.
Mandi, however, produced a crucial defensive block, throwing himself in front of the shot to preserve East Bengal's advantage.
East Bengal finish the job
The home side finally put the result beyond doubt in the 117th minute.
Substitute David Lalhlansanga found space inside the penalty area and calmly finished to extend East Bengal's lead to 3-1.
There was still time for one more goal.
David displayed excellent composure to round the goalkeeper before cutting the ball across to Rohit Danu. The forward had a simple finish into an empty net, completing the 4-1 victory.
East Bengal's qualification marks another major moment for the club, which won the Indian Super League last season for its first top-flight title in 22 years and secured its place in continental competition.
