The nickname came to public attention in 2008, when reports revealed that Parton had given the names to her breasts. “Shock and awe”, also known as rapid dominance, described a military strategy designed to overwhelm an opponent. Parton humorously adapted the phrase to refer to her famously voluptuous figure, reflecting the self-deprecating humour that was a defining part of her public persona.
Parton was never hesitant to joke about her appearance. Her signature hairstyles, glamorous makeup, fitted outfits and prominent cleavage were all deliberate elements of the persona she created early in her career. Scientists at the Roslin Institute reportedly joked that they could not think of a more appropriate pair of glands to name the clone after. Parton said she was pleased by the tribute.
She returned to the breast jokes in 2017 while appearing at the Emmys alongside her 9 to 5 co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The recurring humour demonstrated how deliberately Parton managed the public narrative surrounding her appearance.
