India hopes to win their first international series under Gambhir's leadership in Colombo

Gautam Gambhir’s decision to address the media ahead of India’s second and final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo was unusual, as the Indian head coach has generally spoken to the press either at the start of a series or after it concludes. This time, however, he chose to speak before the decisive match and delivered a characteristically direct message.

The timing is important for Indian Test cricket. The team is undergoing a major transition following the departures of Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, while Rohit Sharma is also no longer part of the Test setup and Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable. Gambhir’s tenure has produced mixed results, including home-series defeats to New Zealand and South Africa and failures to win series against Australia and England.

The final Test in Colombo therefore presents India with an opportunity to secure an overseas series victory and provide Gambhir with a significant result during a difficult transitional period.

Colombo could offer plenty of runs

The Sinhalese Sports Club pitch is generally known for being relatively flat, with significant deterioration often occurring only around the third or fourth day. Those conditions could favour India’s batters, particularly Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who are yet to produce a major score in the series.

Most of India’s other batters have already registered substantial contributions, making it difficult to predict who might dominate the next innings. Maintaining discipline, however, could prove as important as attacking strokeplay.

Jaiswal was seen working specifically on deliveries around the off-stump during training. He appeared focused on avoiding the cut shot that has contributed to some of his recent dismissals, an area Sri Lanka’s bowlers could target again.

Gill, meanwhile, spent considerable time preparing for left-arm orthodox spin, suggesting he is anticipating a significant challenge from Sri Lanka’s spinners. The key now will be converting that preparation into runs.

Rain could play a role

Colombo is expected to experience cloudy, warm and humid conditions, with temperatures around 31°C. There is also a possibility of rain in the early hours, which could leave some moisture around the ground before the start of play.

The greater concern is expected later in the day, with showers forecast around 4 pm local time. Any interruptions could affect the pitch and outfield, while the combination of humidity and rain could influence conditions as the Test progresses.

Selection dilemma for India

Sri Lanka have already confirmed one change at the top of their batting order, with uncapped Kamil Mishara set to replace Nishan Madushka.

India’s main selection question concerns Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wrist-spinner has struggled for consistency, potentially opening the door for off-spinner Saransh Jain.

Saransh could offer an interesting tactical option because of the number of left-handed batters in Sri Lanka’s lineup.

India’s predicted XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill (C), Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, Kuldeep Yadav/Saransh Jain, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

Sri Lanka’s predicted XI: Kamil Mishara, Lahiru Udara, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando.

Full squads

India have retained the same squad for the final Test. Sri Lanka have added Kamil Mishara and Sahan Arachchige to their wider squad, replacing Ramesh Mendis and Nishan Madushka.

The final Test is therefore significant on several fronts: India have a chance to claim an overseas series win, Jaiswal and Gill will look to convert their preparation into big scores, and the team management must make an important decision over its spin combination.
