Jasprit Bumrah's injury has prevented him from playing in the Sri Lankan Tests

India have suffered a significant setback ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka after pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out due to a knee injury. The fast bowler has failed to regain full fitness despite undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Bumrah had initially been included in India's squad subject to clearing his fitness assessment, with several reports suggesting he had successfully completed the required tests. However, persistent discomfort in his left knee led the BCCI medical team to rule him out rather than risk worsening the injury.

The 32-year-old sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI against England in Cardiff, which resulted in reactive swelling. The injury forced him to miss the third ODI at Lord's before he began his rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence.

As part of the recovery process, Bumrah received an injection last month after the medical team believed it would accelerate healing. Although there were discussions about making him available for the second Test in Colombo, his recovery has taken longer than expected, ruling him out of the entire series.

INDIA'S CHALLENGES MOUNT

Bumrah's absence is another major setback for India ahead of the series, which begins in Galle on August 15.

Led by Shubman Gill, India enter the tour placed fifth in the World Test Championship standings, one position above Sri Lanka. With crucial WTC points at stake, the visitors face an even tougher challenge following an injury-hit build-up.

INJURY LIST CONTINUES TO GROW

Bumrah's absence further adds to India's mounting injury concerns.

Fast bowler Harshit Rana has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury, while all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is still recovering from a quadriceps injury.

Washington Sundar will also miss the opening Test after suffering a hamstring injury. In his place, the selectors have drafted in off-spin all-rounder Saransh Jain following his impressive performances in domestic cricket and for India A.

Meanwhile, pacer Akash Deep remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from stress reactions in his back.

Without Bumrah leading the attack, India will once again have to reorganise their pace bowling unit as they aim to begin the Sri Lanka Test series on a positive note despite a growing list of fitness concerns.
