MK Stalin restructures the DMK and imposes two-term limits and age restrictions on important positions

DMK president MK Stalin has introduced major organisational changes within the party, including age limits and a maximum of two terms for several key positions.

The reforms were approved at the DMK Executive Committee meeting at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai and are aimed at bringing “new blood” into the organisation. DMK MP P Wilson welcomed the changes, calling them positive structural reforms.

Under the new rules:

  • Branch Party Secretary: Maximum age of 45.

  • Municipal, City and Town Panchayat Ward Committee Secretaries: Maximum age of 50.

  • Town Panchayat, Area Committee and City Committee Secretaries: Maximum age of 60.

  • District Party Secretaries: Maximum age of 70.

  • Those elected to these positions can serve no more than two terms.

The party has also altered the structure of some local units. In the Greater Chennai Corporation, each Area Committee will cover an average of 40,000 voters, while the figure for other municipal corporations will be 30,000. City Committees will also cover around 40,000 voters on average.
