The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to launch in India on September 9. Here are nine reasons to hold out

Apple has yet to officially confirm its next iPhone launch event, but September 9 is currently being discussed as a possible date for the company’s 2026 event. If the latest reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro series could introduce some of the most significant changes to Apple’s Pro iPhone lineup in several years.

The upcoming models are expected to bring improvements in performance, battery life, photography and connectivity, along with more subtle changes to the display and overall design. For anyone considering the iPhone 17 Pro, here are nine reasons why waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro might make sense.

1. A new chip

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to feature Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which could become the company’s first smartphone processor manufactured using a 2nm process. Apple may also use advanced chip packaging technology with the new processor.

The smaller manufacturing process could help deliver greater performance without a corresponding increase in power consumption. This would be particularly beneficial for resource-intensive activities such as gaming and on-device AI processing. The Pro models are also expected to continue offering 12GB of RAM.

2. Apple’s next-generation modem

Apple is increasingly moving towards developing its own components for the iPhone. After introducing the C1 modem and subsequently the C1X, the company is reportedly working on a C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro.

The new modem could deliver improved cellular performance while using less power. Developing its own modem technology could also give Apple greater control over how the component interacts with its processors and software.

3. A smaller Dynamic Island

The Dynamic Island has remained a defining feature of Apple’s Pro iPhones for several generations, but that could change with the iPhone 18 Pro.

According to leaks, Apple could reduce the size of the display cutout. There have also been reports suggesting that the company is working on placing Face ID components under the display, although it is still uncertain whether all the necessary sensors can be hidden beneath the screen this year.

Even a smaller Dynamic Island could make the display appear less obstructed.

4. A major camera upgrade

Apple has continued to use a fixed aperture on the primary cameras of its Pro iPhones, but that could change with the iPhone 18 generation. Reports suggest Apple may introduce a variable-aperture camera system.

A variable aperture allows the lens to control how much light reaches the sensor. This could provide greater control over depth of field, enabling stronger background blur for portraits or keeping more of a scene in focus when necessary.

Some reports have linked the iPhone 18 Pro Max to Sony’s IMX905 sensor with variable-aperture technology. It remains uncertain whether the smaller Pro model will receive the same system. There has also been speculation about a telephoto camera with a wider aperture and additional professional camera controls.

5. Smarter Pro camera capabilities

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to retain a three-camera rear setup, with 48-megapixel sensors handling the primary, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras. Apple therefore may not focus on increasing megapixel counts with this generation.

Instead, improvements could come through upgraded optics, better sensors and computational photography. The front-facing camera is also expected to remain an 18-megapixel Center Stage camera.

If Apple introduces variable aperture, it could provide a more substantial photography improvement than simply increasing resolution.

6. Changes to Camera Control

Apple introduced the Camera Control button with the iPhone 16 series, allowing users to adjust functions such as zoom and exposure through touch-based controls. However, its more advanced interactions have not been universally well received.

With the iPhone 18 lineup, Apple could simplify the system by removing some of its touch-sensitive elements while keeping controls for essential camera functions. This could make the button easier to use in everyday situations.

7. An improved display panel

The iPhone 18 Pro models are also rumoured to feature upgraded LTPO+ display technology. The newer panels could provide more precise control over the OLED display while improving energy efficiency.

Greater display efficiency could contribute directly to better battery life, especially on smartphones using high-refresh-rate screens. Samsung Display and LG Display are reportedly among the companies supplying panels for Apple’s upcoming Pro models.

8. A larger battery for the Pro Max

Battery life could be another major reason to wait, particularly for those considering the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max.

According to leaks, the Pro Max could receive around a 10 per cent increase in battery capacity. Reports suggest the US version could feature a battery of approximately 5,425mAh, while variants with a physical SIM slot could reportedly have a 5,235mAh battery.

For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is reported to have batteries measuring 5,088mAh or 4,823mAh depending on the model. Combined with the A20 Pro processor, the more efficient C2 modem and display improvements, the larger battery could translate into better real-world endurance.

9. Expanded satellite connectivity

Apple already offers satellite-based emergency services and limited communication capabilities. With the iPhone 18 Pro, the company could expand those capabilities further.

Reports suggest Apple is investigating satellite-based 5G connectivity, which could potentially allow users to access additional services even when conventional cellular networks are unavailable. This could prove especially useful in remote locations, although actual availability would depend on satellite infrastructure and support from local networks.

iPhone 18 Pro launch date and price

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with September 9 currently being mentioned as a potential date for Apple’s event. The company has not confirmed the date, however, and another report suggests pre-orders could begin later than usual.

Pricing remains uncertain as well. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 for the 256GB model, but the iPhone 18 Pro could be more expensive due to rising component costs and the addition of newer hardware. Apple could alternatively retain the same entry-level price while increasing the cost of higher-storage variants. Current leaks have suggested a potential price increase of up to $300 in the US and as much as Rs 20,000 in India.

For now, neither the September 9 event date nor the reported specifications have been confirmed. However, if the current leaks turn out to be accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could deliver notable improvements in performance, battery endurance, cameras, display efficiency and connectivity. For buyers who are not in a rush to upgrade, waiting could therefore be the more attractive option.
