A video showing municipal councillors in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur allegedly taking an oath to share illegal income and commissions has caused a political controversy after going viral on social media.
The Congress has demanded an investigation, alleging corruption in the municipal corporation. Municipal Commissioner Soumya Guru Rani said the video appears to be old and that the matter will be investigated.
WHAT THE VIDEO SHOWS
The footage reportedly shows several Shahjahanpur Municipal Corporation councillors holding Ganga water and making a collective pledge.
They are allegedly heard saying that any illegal income or commission generated through municipal activities would be divided equally among them.
They also reportedly promise to support each other if anyone gets into trouble and not turn against members of their group.
CONGRESS DEMANDS PROBE
Congress district president Rajneesh Gupta accused the municipal corporation of widespread corruption and financial irregularities.
He questioned how much illegal money was allegedly being collected, who benefited from it and whether the money was being distributed among councillors.
ADMINISTRATION TO INVESTIGATE
Municipal Commissioner Soumya Guru Rani said the video appears to be old and that the issue would be discussed with the District Magistrate.
An investigation is expected to determine when the video was recorded, who appears in it and whether the allegations linked to the footage are genuine.
For now, the claims made about the video remain allegations until an official investigation establishes the facts.
