The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has warned Indian citizens against misusing Malaysia’s 30-day visa-free entry facility by travelling to the country in search of employment.
The advisory specifically cautioned travellers about agencies claiming they can arrange jobs in Malaysia for people entering under the visa-free scheme. The High Commission said such assurances are misleading, and working in Malaysia without the appropriate permission can result in serious legal consequences, including detention and action under the country’s immigration laws.
Issued on September 22, the advisory comes amid a “noticeable increase” in the number of Indians entering Malaysia through the visa-free facility with the intention of looking for jobs. According to the High Commission, unscrupulous agents are misleading people by making false employment promises.
Such situations can potentially result in overstaying, illegal immigration status, exploitation, detention and legal proceedings, the advisory said.
The High Commission clarified that the 30-day visa-free entry available to Indian passport holders is intended only for tourism and social visits. Taking up employment while entering under this arrangement is a violation of Malaysian immigration regulations.
Indian nationals travelling to Malaysia for employment have been advised to obtain the required documents, including a valid work permit or a visa with reference (VDR).
For those travelling as genuine tourists, the advisory stressed the importance of carrying all necessary travel documents, including a confirmed return ticket and hotel reservation. Travellers are also required to submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) three days before their arrival and ensure that their passports have at least six months of validity to prevent immigration-related complications.
