A 46-year-old BJP booth-level worker, identified as Chandan Bhalla, was allegedly shot dead in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Sunday evening, police said.
Birbhum SP Vidit Raj Bhundesh said preliminary findings indicated that Bhalla may have died from a gunshot wound. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination, PTI reported.
Bhalla’s family members said he received a call from an unidentified person shortly before leaving his home. Police are probing the circumstances of his death and attempting to identify and locate those responsible.
Shyamapada Mondal, president of the BJP’s Bolpur organisational district, described Bhalla as a “long-time and active worker” of the party.
“It is extremely unfortunate that our party worker has been shot dead. We want the police administration to take action within 24 hours,” Mondal said.
The investigation is continuing, while police have yet to determine the motive behind the alleged shooting.
