Haiwaan, Priyadarshan’s Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Oppam, opened to Rs 3 crore nett in India on its first day. The crime thriller, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles, hit theatres on September 11, 2026.
According to box office tracker Sacnilk, Haiwaan recorded an overall occupancy of 11% across 7,224 shows on its opening day. Morning shows registered around 5% occupancy, while afternoon and evening shows crossed 12%. Night shows performed better, with occupancy exceeding 18%.
The film is estimated to have earned Rs 3.60 crore gross in India and another Rs 1 crore from international markets, taking its estimated worldwide gross to Rs 4.60 crore after its first day.
The opening is considerably lower than expected for a film featuring two established Bollywood stars, especially since it marks the reunion of Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan on screen after 17 years.
The first-day performance also puts Haiwaan among the weaker openers in the careers of both actors. For Akshay Kumar, the reported India gross of Rs 3.60 crore is lower than the opening of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, which collected around Rs 3.88 crore nett on its first day in 2007, according to Sacnilk.
For Saif Ali Khan, Haiwaan has opened at a level comparable to Ta Ra Rum Pum, which earned approximately Rs 3.50 crore nett on its opening day in 2007, as per Sacnilk.
A major hurdle for Haiwaan is the strong box-office performance of Hanuman Ansh, which continues to dominate theatres despite new releases arriving. Even after spending 36 days in cinemas, the devotional drama has maintained a remarkable hold and remains a tough competitor. Sacnilk reported that Hanuman Ansh earned Rs 10.50 crore nett on its sixth Friday and Rs 0.39 crore on Saturday, taking its estimated India nett total to Rs 174.02 crore.
Haiwaan is also facing competition from Mirzapur: The Movie, which remains steady during its second week in theatres. According to Sacnilk, the film added an estimated Rs 9 crore nett on its second Friday. It went on to collect Rs 21 crore nett on Saturday, taking its India gross to Rs 187.80 crore and its India nett total to Rs 157.66 crore so far, with final India collections still awaited.
The film also serves as veteran actor Asrani’s final appearance, following his death in 2025. Co-written and directed by Priyadarshan, Haiwaan has been produced by KVN Productions and Thespian Films. It is an official Hindi adaptation of Priyadarshan’s own 2016 Malayalam blockbuster Oppam, which starred Mohanlal and Samuthirakani.
Boman Irani, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher feature in important roles in Haiwaan, while Malayalam superstar Mohanlal makes a cameo appearance. Pritam has composed the film’s songs, while Ronnie Raphael has created the background score.
