The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV with 1,169 horsepower and a 700-kilometer range was presented

Mercedes-AMG has introduced the new GT SUV, an electric performance vehicle developed in-house using the company’s AMG.EA high-performance architecture. The model combines a full-size SUV design with sports car-like capabilities, delivering up to 1,169bhp, a claimed driving range of up to 700km and DC fast-charging capability of up to 710kW.

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be available in three variants: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. The company has yet to disclose pricing or launch plans for India.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Design and features

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV features a low roofline, wide track, muscular wheel arches and a sharply angled front end. Its front fascia incorporates an AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, while the headlamps feature star-shaped daytime running lights. At the rear, six circular tail-lights with a turbine-inspired design are complemented by an optional light strip.

The SUV uses active aerodynamic technology, including an AEROKINETICS Airpanel with vertical slats in the front bumper to manage cooling airflow. The GT 55 and GT 63 also receive an active roof spoiler that changes position based on speed and driving conditions, helping balance aerodynamic drag and vehicle stability.

Inside, the cabin features a driver-oriented cockpit with a 14-inch central multimedia touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. A separate 14-inch screen is available for the front passenger. Other equipment includes a panoramic glass roof with switchable transparent and opaque settings, ambient lighting, optional AMG Performance seats and an optional Burmester 4D sound system.

The rear compartment features a three-seat bench, foldable seatbacks and electrically folding headrests. Mercedes-AMG says the cabin is designed to deliver the practicality and comfort associated with a full-size SUV despite the vehicle’s sloping roofline.

The GT SUV also features the latest MBUX infotainment system, built on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). It integrates AI assistants from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini. Dedicated AMG applications include the AMG PERFORMANCE MENU, AMG SET-UP and AMG TRACK PACE, which provides telemetry, lap-time recording and other circuit-related data.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Performance and powertrain

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be offered with two electric powertrain configurations. The entry-level GT 53 uses two synchronous motors, with one positioned on each axle, producing a combined 544bhp and 800Nm of torque. The GT 55 delivers up to 816bhp and 1,860Nm, while the flagship GT 63 generates up to 1,169bhp and 2,000Nm through three axial-flux motors.

The GT 55 and GT 63 use three axial-flux motors, with two at the rear and one at the front. The front motor functions as a booster, activating when extra power or traction is needed and disconnecting under lighter loads to minimise energy losses. The GT 53 also features a disconnectable front motor, while its rear axle gets a two-speed transmission designed to balance acceleration with efficiency at higher speeds.

The top-spec GT 63 SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 2.5 seconds and reach 200kmph in 6.8 seconds. With the optional Driver's Package, its maximum speed is 270kmph.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Battery and charging

The electric SUV uses an 800-volt battery system featuring directly cooled cylindrical cells. Mercedes-AMG will offer two battery options, with usable capacities of 106kWh and 128kWh. The larger battery is claimed to provide a WLTP driving range of up to 700km.

The 106kWh battery supports DC charging at up to 600kW and can add up to 380km of claimed WLTP range in 10 minutes. The 128kWh battery supports charging at up to 710kW, adding as much as 450km of claimed range over the same period. Under suitable conditions, the larger battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 12 minutes.

At a 400kW charging station, the 106kWh and 128kWh battery versions take 14 minutes and 16 minutes, respectively, for the specified charging process. A cooling system circulates electrically non-conductive oil directly around individual battery cells to regulate temperatures and maintain consistent performance under sustained loads.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Suspension and driving technology

The GT SUV comes with the newly developed AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension system, which uses active hydraulic elements to manage body roll and pitch. It replaces conventional stabiliser bars and works alongside adjustable air springs to combine ride comfort with precise handling. The system is standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55.

Active rear-axle steering is standard across all variants. At speeds below 80kmph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels to improve manoeuvrability. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction to enhance stability.

The SUV also features AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which varies torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The GT 55 and GT 63 additionally receive torque vectoring technology that distributes power between the rear wheels.

Drivers looking for a more engaging experience can use the AMG RACE ENGINEER system to adjust motor response, cornering behaviour and traction control. The GT 55 and GT 63 also feature AMGFORCE Sport+, a driving programme that simulates the sound of a V8 engine, while the GT 53 reproduces the sound of an AMG six-cylinder engine. The system also includes simulated gear shifts, steering-mounted paddles and seat shakers.
