What is Hrithik doing in Jailer 2? A 40-year story and a love letter to Rajinikanth

Some film moments are meant to create a buzz, while others carry a sense of history. Hrithik Roshan’s cameo in Jailer 2 achieves both, reuniting him with Rajinikanth in a moment that brings their shared journey full circle. From a dramatic entrance through a wall to a playful sunglasses flip, Hrithik’s appearance is full of style and confidence. Beneath the spectacle, however, lies a heartfelt tribute to the actor he worked with when he was just 12 years old.

A massy entry, a little gratitude and a sunglasses flip

In Jailer 2, Rajinikanth’s Tiger Muthuvel Pandian finds himself in a difficult situation as Bodhi Kalpak, played by SJ Suryah, closes in on him. Even the assistance of his trusted allies — Narasimha (Shiva Rajkumar), Mathew (Mohanlal) and Kamdev (Jackie Shroff) — may not be enough to save him. When Kamdev warns Tiger about the impending danger, a phone call sets the stage for a dramatic new arrival.

Hrithik Roshan enters as Roddy, making a memorable impression by driving straight through a wall to rescue Tiger. His larger-than-life entrance fits perfectly into the exaggerated action and entertainment associated with a Rajinikanth film, combining swagger with the confidence of someone arriving to change the situation.

However, Roddy’s first words to Tiger give the scene a more emotional dimension. He reminds Tiger that he helped him 20 years earlier, a favour he has never forgotten.

“You might have forgotten what you’ve done for me. I’ll never forget. Anytime, anything for you, sir,” Roddy says before kissing Tiger’s hand.

Though brief, the exchange adds emotional depth to the cameo. Roddy arrives as the person capable of rescuing Tiger, but his words reveal that he is also returning a favour and expressing his gratitude.

Another memorable moment comes when Hrithik walks alongside Rajinikanth and flips his sunglasses, paying tribute to the superstar’s signature style. The playful gesture allows the two actors to share a moment of mass appeal while acknowledging the screen presence of the legendary actor beside him.

Later, Roddy returns to action when Tiger’s family faces danger. Wearing a workman’s jumpsuit and sporting a bronzed appearance, a fresh hairstyle and piercings, Hrithik appears in a striking new look. His entry has a touch reminiscent of Charlie’s Angels, as Roddy leads a group of four women, including Bani, into the unfolding action.

Despite the elaborate action and dramatic presentation, the sunglasses flip stands out as one of the cameo’s most meaningful details. More than a stylish gesture, it feels like Hrithik paying tribute to one of his earliest mentors on a film set.

From Bhagwan Dada to Jailer 2: 40 years in the making

Long before becoming one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, Hrithik shared screen space with Rajinikanth in Bhagwan Dada. He was only 12 when he played Govind, a young boy adopted by Rajinikanth’s title character. The film also featured Hrithik’s father, actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan.

That experience formed an early part of Hrithik’s introduction to filmmaking. Four decades later, Jailer 2 brings the actors together once again, with Hrithik now an established star and Rajinikanth continuing to dominate the screen.

The reunion becomes even more meaningful when viewed alongside Hrithik’s recollections of working with Rajinikanth as a child. At the trailer launch of The Roshans in January 2025, Hrithik remembered that he had not fully understood the significance of appearing alongside the superstar at the time.

“I had no idea that I was standing with the greatest legend of all time. For me, he was Rajni uncle. I used to talk to him like, yeah, no... I had my way with him," he said.

Hrithik also recalled Rajinikanth’s kindness on set, particularly when a shot went wrong.

“I will realise the burden and the weight of the moment that I am sharing screen space with him... He was so gentle and so giving. Whenever I messed up a shot, my grandfather used to cut the shot. And Rajni sir used to take the blame, saying, sorry, sorry, sorry. My fault," he added.

His memories offer a glimpse into the relationship that gives their on-screen reunion its warmth. As a young boy, Hrithik could speak to Rajinikanth without fully appreciating his legendary status. Nevertheless, the superstar’s kindness left a lasting impression on him.

By January 2025, Hrithik had already expressed his wish to work with Rajinikanth again, even before Jailer 2 began production. The sequel has now made that reunion possible, bringing their shared history into a new cinematic setting.

In Jailer 2, Roddy may be the man who comes to Tiger’s rescue, but the cameo also represents a full-circle moment in Hrithik’s journey. The boy who once played Rajinikanth’s adopted son now stands beside him as a successful star, matching his swagger while borrowing one of his most recognisable gestures.

The sunglasses flip lasts just a moment, but the history behind it stretches across four decades.
