Atiq Ahmad, a gangster-turned-politician, and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead at close range by three men posing as journalists on Saturday night while being taken by police to a Prayagraj medical college for a checkup. This occurred during a media encounter. The distressing video of the incident, which showed the brothers being killed while they were shackled, was extensively shared on social media and on news networks.
Asad Ahmad, who had died in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, had his final rites done earlier on Saturday. The Umesh Pal murder case led Ahmad, a former Samajwadi Party MP, and his brother to Prayagraj, where they appeared in court and were remanded in police custody.
1. According to police commissioner Ramit Sharma, the three attackers—who were quickly apprehended—had joined the throng of media requesting statements from Atiq and Ashraf.
2. Around 10 o'clock at night, when journalists followed the two as they were being led to the hospital by police for a medical checkup, the shooting was captured live on camera. The shooting did not appear to have hurt anyone else.
3. Photos and videos taken at the scene showed the two men, who were shackled together, lying on the ground with blood gathering around them. There were at least two guns there that were reportedly dropped by the attackers, according to the police.
4. According to a news release from the police, three suspects, named Arun Maurya, Lavlesh Tiwari, and Sunny, were taken into custody.
5. The state police officials were told to remain on high alert and make sure that law and order were maintained throughout the state by the chief minister Yogi Adityanath during a late-night meeting.
6. Yogi Adityanath also pleaded with the populace to disregard misinformation concerning the tragedy. UP home secretary Sanjay Prasad, UP Police director general of police (DGP) RK Vishwakarma, and other top officials were present at the meeting at the chief minister's residence.
7. Senior police authorities instructed the state police social media cell to keep an eye on online discussions of the Prayagraj incident and to take harsh action against anyone found to have posted undesirable material in this context.
8. In response to the occurrence, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been implemented in all 75 UP districts.
9. The leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Akhilesh Yadav, responded to the incident by writing in Hindi on Twitter: "Crime has reached its zenith in Uttar Pradesh, and the criminals are undeterred. What about public safety if someone can be shot and killed inside a police perimeter? Due to this, the general public is experiencing a climate of fear, which suggests that certain individuals are doing it on purpose.
10. In response to the shocking murders, BJP MP Subrat Pathak stated, "What happened in Prayagraj is a matter of investigation. Even while the manner of the killings cannot yet be justified, it is important to keep in mind that the victims were not all saints. They were sought after in relation to numerous horrifying crimes.
