Gujarat: Five newborns in Surat are given new life by a 100-hour-old brain dead infant

Roughly 100 hours following the birth of the infant, which occurred on the evening of October 23, a momentous act of generosity took place as the parents of this 100-hour-old brain-dead baby decided to bestow the gift of life upon four other infants residing in Surat, a city in the state of Gujarat, India. This remarkable initiative was facilitated by the Jeevandeep Organ Donation Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that played a pivotal role in orchestrating this humanitarian endeavor.

The narrative unfolds with the newborn immediately being placed in an incubator upon delivery due to a frail heartbeat and an absence of breathing. After an intricate 48-hour period of vigilant monitoring and scrutiny by medical experts, the infant was referred to a neurosurgeon who, regrettably, pronounced the devastating verdict of brain death.

The decision to donate the precious organs of the infant, thereby offering a second chance at life to those in dire need, was reached following exhaustive and compassionate counseling sessions with the parents. Vipul Talaviya, the managing trustee of the foundation, shared this poignant aspect of the story with the news agency PTI.

It is also noteworthy that this infant has earned the distinction of being the youngest organ donor in the nation. The parents of the baby, Anup, and Vandana Thakor, were moved by the knowledge of a similar instance that transpired just a few days prior, on October 18, involving a five-day-old baby who had hitherto held the title of the youngest organ donor.

In a poignant display of selflessness, on the night of Friday, around 100 hours after the infant's birth on October 23, the precious gifts of the baby's two kidneys, spleen, and eyes were meticulously harvested. Subsequently, these invaluable organs were transplanted into the bodies of four infants, bestowing upon them the promise of a new lease on life.
