Priyank Kharge, the son of Karnataka's Information Technology Minister and prominent Congress leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, has made it abundantly clear that he stands ready to assume the role of Chief Minister in the state, provided the party's high command extends such a request to him.
In response to inquiries from the press regarding the possibility of his elevation to the position of Chief Minister, Kharge expressed his willingness during an interaction on Friday, stating, "I am of the opinion that it should be at the behest of the High Command. If they were to approach me with the proposition of becoming the Chief Minister, I would undoubtedly respond in the affirmative."
This declaration by Kharge comes on the heels of a noteworthy incident earlier in the week when he strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He asserted that certain individuals within the BJP ranks, whom he described as "desperate BJP leaders," may have purportedly solicited a staggering sum of Rs 1,000 crore from Union Home Minister Amit Shah in an alleged attempt to undermine the Congress-led government in Karnataka.
Kharge's remarks were prompted by a revelation made by Ravikumar Ganiga, a Congress MLA representing Mandya, who claimed that a delegation from the BJP had approached four of the Congress's MLAs with an enticing offer of Rs 50 crore each, in addition to ministerial positions, in exchange for their defection to the BJP.
In the midst of these developments, the present Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, unequivocally declared on Thursday his intention to remain in office for the full five-year term. This announcement was intended to dispel any speculations that had arisen within certain circles of the ruling Congress party, which had entertained notions of a potential leadership change after two and a half years into the current government's tenure.
When probed for a definitive statement regarding his tenure, Siddaramaiah confidently affirmed, "Our government will indeed serve its full five-year term. I am currently the Chief Minister, and I shall continue in this capacity."
Siddaramaiah assumed the role of Chief Minister on May 20 earlier in the same year, following the Congress's resounding electoral victory that resulted in the ousting of the BJP from power in the state.
