Kenyan student detained by Enforcement Directorate in Goa human trafficking case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) apprehended a Kenyan national, currently pursuing studies in India, on suspicions of his engagement in a human trafficking network operating in Goa and victimizing young African women.

The ED's action against Newton Muthuri Kimani stems from a complaint filed in Goa against two Nigerian individuals, namely Israelite alias Dorcast Maria and Olokpa. Allegedly, these individuals enticed African girls to Goa with promises of job opportunities in the hospitality sector, only to subject them to forced prostitution upon their arrival.

During the ED's investigation, Kimani's involvement surfaced as it was discovered that he managed multiple bank accounts that received funds associated with the trafficking operation. The illicit funds were subsequently transferred to Kenya and other destinations utilizing the mobile payment service M-Pesa and various foreign bank accounts, potentially involving hawala operators.

A raid carried out in the Anjuna area of Goa resulted in the rescue of two Kenyan nationals ensnared in the trafficking network. Further searches conducted in Gujarat and Punjab led to the confiscation of incriminating documents and digital devices, providing additional leads for the ongoing investigation.

The Panaji court has granted the ED custody of Kimani until December 15, allowing for further inquiries into his suspected role in the human trafficking network.
