Reuven Azar's nomination as India's new envoy is approved by Israel

On Sunday, the Israeli government granted approval for the appointment of Reuven Azar as the new Ambassador to India, as per a statement from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Additionally, Azar is set to assume the role of non-resident Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Bhutan. His appointment is part of a broader selection, with 21 new Heads of Missions receiving clearance to commence their service.

Foreign Minister Eli Cohen extended congratulations to the newly appointed ambassadors, emphasizing their role in representing Israel, fortifying its economy, and garnering international support for the nation. While Azar is currently serving as the Ambassador of Israel to Romania, the specific commencement date for his tenure in New Delhi is yet to be disclosed.

Azar's extensive diplomatic experience includes roles such as Head of the Israel-US-China internal task force at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy National Security Advisor for Foreign Policy at the National Security Council, and Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel. His diplomatic journey further includes a term as Deputy Ambassador at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, DC, and service as the Head of Middle East Research in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Having completed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cadet training program in 1994, Azar has predominantly held Middle East-related positions, addressing issues such as Iran sanctions, Middle East economic research, cooperation and negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, and research on Palestinian matters. Born in Argentina, Azar immigrated to Israel at the age of 13. He served in a paratroopers battalion of the Israeli Defence Forces and holds graduate and post-graduate degrees in International Relations from the Hebrew University.
