Amid a dispute, the Maldives wishes India a happy Republic Day and recalls centuries of friendship

Amidst escalating tensions following derogatory remarks made by deputy ministers of the Maldives against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu extended his heartfelt greetings to India on its 75th Republic Day, marking a significant gesture in the diplomatic discourse between New Delhi and Male. Through an official statement issued by the Maldivian President’s office, Muizzu emphasized the enduring nature of the "centuries-old friendship" shared between the two nations, rooted in principles of mutual respect and a profound sense of camaraderie.

In a display of diplomatic goodwill, President Muizzu conveyed his warm regards and sincere felicitations to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the momentous occasion of India's 75th Republic Day. Expressing his wishes for continued peace, progress, and prosperity for India and its people in the years to come, Muizzu underscored the deep bonds of friendship that have been cultivated over time, highlighting the enduring strength of the Maldives-India relationship.

Furthermore, Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer echoed sentiments of goodwill and camaraderie, extending heartfelt greetings to Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar and the people of India on the joyous occasion of Republic Day. Through a message shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), Zameer expressed confidence in the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Maldives and India, envisioning a future marked by continued flourishing relations.

This notable display of goodwill and diplomatic outreach marks a significant milestone, as it represents the first instance of Maldivian leaders extending messages of goodwill towards India since tensions arose between the two nations. The derogatory remarks made by Maldivian deputy ministers had previously strained relations, leading to widespread boycotts of travel destinations in the Maldives by Indian tourists.
