Meet Priyanka Panwar, the first UP SPOT commando, and other women in black

Asim Arun, a former IPS officer, and current Uttar Pradesh Minister, took to X on Friday to share the remarkable journey of Priyanka Panwar, who made history by becoming the first policewoman to join the esteemed Special Police Operations Team (SPOT) within the Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).

In a comprehensive account shared on the platform, Asim Arun recounted the process through which Priyanka Panwar defied conventions to pursue her dream of joining the SPOT unit. He detailed how, upon expressing her interest in joining the unit, Arun had to revise the entry criteria, which had previously only permitted male personnel to participate in the selection process.

Having entered the Uttar Pradesh Police Force as a wrestler in 2011, Priyanka's relentless pursuit led her to secure a spot within the SPOT unit in 2017.

Introducing Priyanka Panwar as a commendable member of the Special Police Operations Team, Arun's post shed light on her inspiring journey. He reminisced about the pivotal moment when he learned of Priyanka's desire to join the unit, acknowledging the initial oversight in failing to include provisions for female officers in the application process.

Correcting this oversight, Arun ensured Priyanka's inclusion in the selection process, a decision that paved the way for her successful entry into the SPOT team following rigorous training.

Highlighting Priyanka's exceptional performance and the subsequent influx of female officers into the SPOT team, Arun emphasized the invaluable contributions made by these women in undertaking perilous operations. In his closing remarks on X, Arun championed the courage and efficiency displayed by these female officers, asserting their equal competence and dedication.

The Special Police Operations Team (SPOT), established by the UP ATS in 2017, serves as a crucial unit for intelligence gathering and executing counter-terrorism and anti-naxal operations. Equipped with specialized training, advanced weaponry, and modern technologies, the SPOT team comprises multiple units strategically stationed across various districts of Uttar Pradesh.
