Are you going to Lakshadweep? What you should know about sales of booze

Amidst the recent tensions between India and the Maldives, individuals contemplating a visit to Lakshadweep may be curious about the availability of liquor in this scenic Union Territory.

It is crucial to clarify that while liquor is not completely banned in Lakshadweep, its distribution is confined to specific areas with the necessary authorization from the administration.

Liquor can only be purchased in Kavaratti, the administrative capital of Lakshadweep, and Bangaram Islands. However, it is imperative to note that this privilege is exclusively extended to tourists and government officials, and local residents are not permitted to partake in these sales. The Lakshadweep Tourism Developmental Corporation oversees and regulates the sale of liquor in these designated areas, including Bangaram Atoll, which was recently visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Notably, Bangaram Atoll is reserved exclusively for tourists and lacks any permanent local population.

In August 2023, Lakshadweep witnessed protests from its residents after the administration released the draft 'Lakshadweep Excise Regulation, 2022,' soliciting feedback and suggestions from the public within a 30-day period. The administration clarified that the protests were premature as the new policy was still under consideration, emphasizing that no conclusive decision had been reached at that juncture.
