Republic Day: The home ministry advises disposing of paper flags in a dignified manner and privately

In anticipation of Republic Day on January 26, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has released a circular addressed to states and union territories, emphasizing the need to safeguard the proper disposal of Indian national flags made of paper. These flags, commonly used by the public during significant national, cultural, and sports events, are not to be casually discarded or thrown on the ground after such occasions.

The ministry underscored the symbolic significance of the Indian national flag, representing the collective hopes and aspirations of the nation's people. According to the directive, in line with the provisions of Clause (x) of Paragraph 2.2 of Part II of the Flag Code of India, paper tricolors used by the public may be waved during events of national importance. However, it explicitly calls for the responsible disposal of such flags in private, ensuring that the dignity associated with the national flag is upheld.

The ministry's communication, disseminated to all states and union territories, articulates the importance of adhering to these guidelines for the respectful handling and disposal of paper flags. The letter reinforces the notion that the disposal of such flags should align with the dignity and reverence befitting the national flag.

It is worth noting that on January 26, 2024, India will commemorate its 75th Republic Day, with the distinguished presence of French President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest at the parade in Delhi.
