A group of medical students from Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Karnataka have found themselves facing repercussions for their actions, as they were discovered recording Instagram Reels within the hospital premises. This seemingly innocuous tagline, 'Reel it, feel it,' has led to unintended consequences for these students, as their conduct has been deemed in violation of hospital regulations.
In response to this breach of protocol, the hospital management has opted to impose a penalty by extending the horsemanship training period of the involved students by an additional 10 days, a decision enacted last Saturday. The director of Gadag Institute of Medical Science, Dr. Basavaraj Bommanhalli, expressed grave concern over the matter, emphasizing that such activities within the hospital environment are unacceptable. Dr. Bommanhalli asserted that the students should have exercised greater discretion and conducted their activities outside the hospital premises, thus avoiding any potential inconvenience to patients.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Dr. Bommanhalli clarified that no authorization had been granted for such activities, despite the students' claims that the recordings were intended for a pre-graduation ceremony. As a result, their horsemanship, which was nearing its scheduled conclusion within the next 10–20 days, has been prolonged by an additional 10 days as a disciplinary measure.
This incident occurred in the wake of another recent controversy in Karnataka's healthcare sector, where a doctor was dismissed for conducting a pre-wedding photoshoot within the confines of an operation theatre in a government hospital located in Chitradurga district.
The revelation of these events came to light when videos depicting medical students dancing to Hindi and Kannada songs within the district hospital corridor began circulating widely on social media platforms. In response, these actions were met with criticism from social media users, who perceived the behavior as indicative of a lack of dedication to their professional duties.
