Rein in Sanjay Raut; his statements have harmed the coalition: Tehseen Poonawalla to Uddhav

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's recent decision to join the BJP has ignited discussions among political circles, with Congress supporter Tehseen Poonawalla pointing to one of the significant factors behind the downfall of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state. Poonawalla highlighted remarks made by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut as a contributing factor, urging Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), to exercise control over Raut's statements, which were deemed detrimental to the unity of the Opposition INDIA alliance in Maharashtra.

Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha member of Shiv Sena (UBT) and the executive editor of 'Saamna', the mouthpiece of the Uddhav Thackeray faction, is known for his penchant for controversial statements. However, Poonawalla's call for Thackeray's intervention represents a notable departure, as it comes from a person affiliated with an alliance partner.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Tehseen Poonawalla emphasized the impact of Raut's comments, particularly referencing a statement made a month ago when Milind Deora, a prominent Congress figure, departed from the party. Poonawalla underscored the need for Thackeray to address Raut's rhetoric, which has allegedly undermined the cohesion of the Maharashtra alliance.

The resignation of Ashok Chavan from the Congress and his subsequent induction into the BJP further intensified discussions surrounding the state's political landscape. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed Chavan into the BJP fold, acknowledging his significant political trajectory.

Poonawalla also shared a video message expressing concern over Raut's statements and their purported detrimental impact on the MVA government. He suggested that Raut's recent remarks regarding seat-sharing talks within the INDIA bloc were perceived as derogatory towards the Maharashtra Congress.

Ashok Chavan's departure from the Congress was characterized by a lack of explicit reasons provided for his exit, further adding to the political intrigue. Meanwhile, Raut attributed Chavan's decision to pressure from investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax (I-T) Department.

Raut's history of contentious remarks has stirred controversy in the past, notably his characterization of the state legislature as a "chor mandal" (collective of thieves), which drew widespread criticism and led to a privilege motion initiated by BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar.

Despite recurrent instances of backlash against Raut's statements, Poonawalla's call for Thackeray to rein in Raut stands out as a rare instance of critique originating from within the fold of Shiv Sena (UBT)'s allies.
