Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Monday that plans are underway to establish a police station in Haldwani's Banbhulpura, where an illegal madrasa was recently demolished. Dhami emphasized that this initiative aims to send a resolute message to those involved in the violent incidents that erupted during the demolition operation.
Speaking at an event today, Dhami elaborated, stating, "We are taking steps to construct a police station at the site where unauthorized encroachments were removed in Banbhulpura, Haldwani. This decisive action from our government is a clear indication to troublemakers and instigators that disruptive behavior will not be tolerated in Uttarakhand."
Dhami highlighted that a significant portion of land was reclaimed from encroachment during the clearance operation in the 'Malik Ka Bagicha' area of Banbhulpura.
The violence on February 8 resulted in five casualties as clashes erupted over the demolition of the illegally constructed madrasa. Over 100 police personnel sustained injuries during the clashes, with locals hurling projectiles and incendiary devices at municipal workers and law enforcement officers. Subsequently, many police officers sought refuge at a police station, which was later targeted and set ablaze by the mob.
Law enforcement authorities have arrested 30 individuals thus far on charges related to inciting violence during the demolition drive.
In response to the unrest, additional paramilitary forces were deployed to Banbhulpura on Monday to maintain peace and order.
District Magistrate Vandana Singh disclosed that 120 firearms licenses were revoked, and efforts are underway to apprehend those involved in the rioting on February 8, during which police personnel and municipal workers were assaulted, and vehicles were torched.
