"The Prime Minister oversaw every step personally": Government following the release of eight Navy veterans from Qatar

Following the release of eight Navy veterans by Qatar, the government emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "personally supervised" all efforts to facilitate their return home.

In remarks to reporters on Monday, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra stated, "The Prime Minister has been directly involved in overseeing all developments in this case and has consistently taken proactive steps to ensure the safe return of Indian nationals to their homeland."

Expressing gratitude for their repatriation, Kwatra added, "We are thankful for their safe return. We deeply appreciate the decision of the Qatari government and the Amir to release them. Seven of the Indian nationals have returned, and efforts are ongoing to expedite the return of the 8th individual."

The release of the eight former Indian Navy personnel, except one, represents a significant diplomatic achievement for India, marking the culmination of 18 months of legal and diplomatic endeavors.

The individuals, associated with Dahra Global, were detained in August 2022 on charges of espionage. Although the specifics of the allegations were not publicly disclosed by Qatari authorities or the Indian government, given the sensitivity of the matter, the Navy veterans were sentenced to death by Qatar's Court of First Instance on October 26, 2023.

India vehemently objected to the ruling, pledging to explore all available legal avenues. Eventually, in December of the same year, a Qatari court overturned the death sentences, opting for imprisonment instead, following an appeal filed by the Indian government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Qatar on February 14 underscores the importance of bilateral relations. During this visit, PM Modi is scheduled to engage in discussions with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad, the Amir of Qatar, and other high-ranking officials. This visit will mark PM Modi's second trip to Qatar.
