Travel agencies offer 'weekend offers' to voters in an effort to boost turnout for the Lok Sabha election

As the nation gears up for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections, coinciding with a long weekend across 13 states and Union Territories, tour operators are innovatively encouraging voter turnout. Recognizing the allure of freebies, from cold beverages to ice cream, especially during scorching summer days, tour operators have leveraged special offers to incentivize voting.

In an effort to counter the potential dip in voter participation due to planned mini-vacations, tour firms have introduced enticing discounts and offers, urging individuals to prioritize their civic duty before embarking on leisure activities. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of the long weekend on voter turnout, particularly crucial in closely contested constituencies where every vote holds significance.

Wowidays, a global tour and travel company, has incentivized voters with discounts ranging from 5 to 10 per cent on future tours, with an additional 10 per cent discount and free stays for first-time voters within family tours. Similarly, in Indore, food markets have introduced custom menus and complimentary refreshments, including soft beverages and local delicacies, exclusively for voters.

Notably, travel trends indicate a growing interest in pilgrimage and spiritual retreats, alongside a rise in drive-cations to serene getaways. SOTC Travel and Thomas Cook (India) Limited are observing heightened demand for cooler destinations like Kashmir, Himachal, and Uttarakhand, as well as jungle safaris and wellness retreats.

In addition to promotional campaigns across various media platforms and celebrity endorsements, authorities have facilitated advance polling options, extended polling hours, and explored online voting alternatives to enhance voter convenience and accessibility.

The significance of long weekend voters cannot be understated, as their participation can significantly influence election outcomes, particularly in closely contested constituencies. With schools likely to be closed for polling purposes and teachers deployed for election duty, efforts are underway to ensure a seamless voting experience for all eligible citizens.

As India prepares for the second phase of general elections on April 26, collective efforts aim to uphold the democratic ethos by encouraging robust voter engagement and participation, despite the lure of a long weekend getaway.
