The South China Sea has become a focal point of military tensions between Manila and Beijing, particularly over territorial claims concerning Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands. Recent confrontations near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal have further exacerbated the situation.
Scarborough Shoal, known as Huangyan Dao by China and Panatag Shoal or Bajo de Masinloc by the Philippines, lies within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but is also claimed by China. The area is rich in resources and has been a constant flashpoint between the two nations.
Amid escalating tensions, India and the Philippines are exploring enhanced defence cooperation, including the deployment of an Indian defence attaché in Manila. India has recently supplied BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles to bolster the Philippines' coastal security.
Despite losing a case against the Philippines in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016, China continues its aggressive actions in the South China Sea. Beijing's "nine-dash line" territorial claim encroaches upon the EEZs of neighboring countries, leading to heightened tensions in the region.
In response to China's assertiveness, the Philippines has stationed a warship, the BRP Sierra Madre, at the Second Thomas Shoal since 1999. However, Manila accuses China's Coast Guard of disrupting its resupply missions and engaging in dangerous maneuvers near the area.
The increasing military cooperation between India and the Philippines comes against the backdrop of a border standoff between India and China in Eastern Ladakh. As both countries face common challenges posed by China, their military engagement is likely to intensify in the coming days.
