Delhi Capitals have suffered a major setback as Australia’s premier pacer Mitchell Starc has decided not to return to India for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. His absence weakens DC’s bowling lineup considerably, forcing the franchise to scramble for alternatives or rely on their current squad members to fill the gap.
Starc joins a growing list of overseas players opting out of the IPL’s resumption on May 17, following the suspension of the tournament due to escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan. Starc had participated in the abandoned match against Punjab Kings in Dharamshala, which was called off amid air strike alerts near the border.
Delhi Capitals have already lost Jake Fraser-McGurk, who also decided against returning. The team signed Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement, but his participation remains uncertain as the Bangladesh Cricket Board has yet to issue a No Objection Certificate. Bangladesh is currently engaged in a T20 series against the UAE in Sharjah, further complicating his availability.
While DC awaits clarity on the availability of Faf du Plessis, South African youngster Tristan Stubbs has confirmed he will return but only for the rest of the league stage, should DC qualify for the playoffs.
Starc’s unavailability is particularly damaging given that he is DC’s highest wicket-taker this season, with 14 wickets in 11 matches. With key matches looming against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Punjab Kings, losing such a crucial bowler adds to the uncertainty surrounding Delhi’s chances to secure a playoff spot.
On the other hand, Starc’s fellow Australian Josh Hazlewood is expected to return to India to rejoin Royal Challengers Bangalore, despite a shoulder injury that sidelined him during RCB’s last game against Chennai Super Kings.
