Panic spread across the Ambedkar Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday after a suspected gas leak from an operational oil well triggered a fire, raising fears among local residents. The well is operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation through a production contractor. Thick gas reportedly drifted into nearby residential areas, prompting emergency measures and evacuations as authorities moved to contain the situation.
According to preliminary information shared by company officials, there were no reports of casualties or injuries. Residents, however, described the gas spreading like a dense mist that entered homes and lanes, creating widespread alarm. As a precaution, officials evacuated families living close to the site and relocated them to safer areas to prevent any health or safety risks.
Initial assessments suggest the incident occurred when production at the well suddenly stopped and workover rig operations were in progress. During the process, a large volume of gas mixed with crude oil is believed to have gushed out with force, rapidly spreading toward the village and leading to the fire. The exact sequence of events is still under investigation.
Local villagers alerted ONGC authorities soon after noticing the leak, following which police and revenue officials rushed to the spot. Security arrangements were tightened, and the situation on the ground is being closely monitored by local officials, with police overseeing crowd control and safety measures.
Officials have said that the precise cause of the gas leak and the extent of any damage are yet to be determined. Efforts are ongoing to bring the situation fully under control, after which a detailed technical assessment will be carried out to identify the reasons behind the incident and prevent any recurrence.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu took note of the reported gas leakage at the ONGC drilling site in Irsumanda village of Malikipuram mandal in the Rajole constituency. He reviewed the situation by speaking with senior ministers and officials, seeking updates on containment efforts and the safety of affected residents.
The ministers informed the Chief Minister that they were already coordinating with local authorities and recommended intensifying precautionary and relief measures. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that villagers face no hardship and instructed them to move people from vulnerable areas to safer locations as a preventive step.
Following the incident, senior officials, including the district superintendent of police, the local Member of Parliament, and the Rajole MLA, visited the site to inspect the blowout-affected area. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations and safety operations proceed.
