Deals of Rs 858 crore are signed by the defense ministry for missile systems and Navy aircraft maintenance

The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹858 crore to enhance India’s air defence and maritime capabilities, covering key acquisitions and maintenance support for both the Army and the Navy.

A major component of the deal is a ₹445 crore agreement with Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems for the Indian Army. These systems are expected to strengthen India’s multi-layered air defence network by improving its ability to counter aerial threats such as aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles, while also reinforcing defence ties with Russia.

In parallel, a ₹413 crore contract has been signed with Boeing India Defence Private Limited for depot-level inspection and maintenance of the Indian Navy’s P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft. This agreement will enable in-country Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) support, reducing reliance on foreign facilities and ensuring better operational readiness.

Officials stated that the maintenance contract falls under the “Buy Indian” category with full indigenous content, aligning with the government’s push for self-reliance in defence under broader national initiatives.

Together, these agreements aim to improve both India’s defensive preparedness against aerial threats and its maritime surveillance capabilities, while also strengthening domestic defence infrastructure and long-term sustainability.
