The government approves defense plans for Rs 2.38 trillion for planes, S-400s, and strike drones

Rajnath Singh announced that the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved procurement proposals worth ₹2.38 lakh crore, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s military capability and overall defence preparedness.

Chairing the DAC meeting, Singh said the approvals would significantly enhance operational readiness across the armed forces. He also highlighted that both approvals and contracts in the current financial year have reached record levels, reflecting an accelerated push for military modernisation.

The approvals grant Acceptance of Necessity for a wide range of acquisitions across the Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard. For the Army, key systems cleared include advanced air defence tracking systems, armoured-piercing ammunition, high-capacity communication networks, upgraded artillery platforms, and aerial surveillance systems designed to operate without dependence on runways. These are aimed at improving battlefield awareness, firepower, and communication reliability.

The Air Force is set to receive a major boost through the procurement of medium transport aircraft to replace ageing fleets, along with advanced air defence systems such as the S-400 missile system to counter long-range aerial threats. Additional approvals include remotely piloted strike aircraft for offensive and surveillance roles, as well as upgrades to existing fighter jet engines to extend service life and maintain readiness.

For maritime security, the Coast Guard will acquire heavy-duty air cushion vehicles to enhance coastal patrol, search and rescue operations, and rapid response capabilities in sensitive areas.

Singh noted that in the current financial year, the DAC has already cleared dozens of proposals worth several lakh crore rupees, with capital procurement contracts also reaching unprecedented levels. These developments indicate a sustained focus on strengthening India’s defence infrastructure, improving indigenous capabilities, and preparing for evolving security challenges.
