The last moments of a mother holding her son before the Jabalpur cruise overturned are captured on camera

A tragic boating accident in Jabalpur has drawn widespread attention after a viral video captured a mother holding her four-year-old son in the final moments before a cruise vessel capsized in the Bargi dam reservoir, an incident that has claimed at least nine lives so far.

The footage, recorded inside the boat, shows the woman wearing a life jacket and tightly embracing her child as panic spread among passengers and water began entering the vessel. People can be seen hurriedly distributing life jackets while the situation rapidly deteriorates. Hours later, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the mother and child still bound together within the same life jacket, a detail that has come to symbolise the emotional weight of the disaster.

The accident occurred when the vessel, carrying around 30 passengers, was caught in a sudden storm that brought strong winds and rough waters, destabilising the boat. According to eyewitness accounts, several passengers had urged the crew to return to shore as conditions worsened, but the vessel continued further into the reservoir before ultimately overturning.

Rescue operations were launched immediately, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force and local authorities working continuously at the site. So far, 22 individuals have been rescued, while efforts remain ongoing to locate those still missing.

The aftermath of the incident has been marked by scenes of grief, with families mourning the victims as bodies were brought ashore. Rakesh Singh, who visited the site, was visibly affected by the tragedy. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that the government is providing assistance to the affected families and continuing all possible efforts in the rescue and recovery operations.

The incident has raised concerns about safety measures, weather preparedness, and operational decision-making for passenger vessels operating in such reservoirs, particularly during sudden changes in weather conditions.
