The public still has faith in the AAP: Bhagwant Mann wins the Punjab Assembly's trust vote

The Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, secured a unanimous victory in a Confidence Motion in the state Assembly, reinforcing its numerical strength and political position. The motion was passed with all present members of the ruling party voting in favour, while opposition parties remained absent during the proceedings.

Mann described the outcome as a clear indication that public support for his government remains intact, asserting that the party’s base would continue to strengthen ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. He also interpreted the absence of Congress members from the House as indirect support for the motion, suggesting that the opposition had effectively conceded ground during the vote.

A total of 88 AAP legislators participated in the session. The remaining members were unavailable due to various reasons, including travel abroad, legal custody, and hospitalisation. Despite these absences, the ruling party’s majority ensured a smooth and unanimous passage of the motion, highlighting its dominant position in the 117-member Assembly.

While introducing the motion, Mann accused opposition parties of attempting to create instability through misinformation and political narratives. He argued that such efforts had failed to resonate with the public, claiming that the electorate continues to back the government’s policies and governance approach. He contrasted this with what he described as internal divisions within opposition ranks, portraying the ruling party as unified and focused on governance.

The Chief Minister also used the occasion to criticise rival parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, questioning their organisational strength and alleging a lack of grassroots presence. He further claimed that many of their leaders had previously been associated with other parties, particularly the Congress.

Reaffirming loyalty to the party’s national leadership, Mann emphasised that the AAP, under Arvind Kejriwal, was built through sustained effort and public support. He stated that isolated defections would not weaken the party, which he said is rooted in trust among voters.

In addition, Mann signalled a potential constitutional initiative by stating that he would approach the President of India with a copy of the confidence motion, along with supporting legislators, to advocate for stricter anti-defection laws or provisions allowing voters to recall elected representatives. He indicated that Punjab could take the lead in formally raising such demands.

The Chief Minister also expressed concerns about the functioning of central institutions, alleging misuse of agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation, and argued that such practices undermine constitutional principles associated with B. R. Ambedkar.

With 94 seats in the Assembly, the AAP holds a clear majority, while opposition parties collectively account for a much smaller share. The passage of the Confidence Motion has therefore reinforced the government’s legislative stability while also serving as a platform for broader political messaging.
