A 27-year-old woman employed at the Palghar District Collector's Office was critically injured after she was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon in a busy area of Maharashtra's Palghar city. Police have arrested the accused, who reportedly attempted to take his own life multiple times while trying to evade arrest following the incident.
The victim, identified as Snehal Sawant, was attacked near the Gold Cinema area of Palghar at around 6.30 pm on Friday evening. According to police, the assailant repeatedly assaulted her with a sharp weapon, inflicting serious injuries to her neck and waist before fleeing the scene. The attack occurred in a public area and created panic among residents and passers-by who witnessed the aftermath.
Sawant, who was residing in rented accommodation near the Gold Cinema complex, suffered severe injuries during the assault. She was initially taken to Palghar Rural Hospital, where doctors provided emergency treatment. Due to the critical nature of her injuries, she was later shifted to a private hospital in Boisar for advanced medical care and specialised treatment.
Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh had earlier stated that the motive behind the attack was being investigated. However, as the investigation progressed, police reportedly discovered that the accused was known to the victim and that the incident may have stemmed from a personal dispute related to their relationship.
According to police sources, the accused, identified as Amol Mule, was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with Sawant. Investigators believe that tensions had developed between the two in recent days and that the deteriorating relationship may have ultimately led to the violent attack. Police are currently examining the nature of their interactions and the events that preceded the incident.
Following the attack, Mule allegedly attempted to avoid arrest and made several efforts to end his own life. According to sources, he first tried to hang himself, but survived when the rope reportedly snapped before the attempt could be completed.
Police sources further stated that he later allegedly consumed poison in another attempt to take his own life while remaining on the run from authorities. His movements after the attack became the focus of an intensive search operation launched by local law enforcement agencies.
The breakthrough came when police received information about a suspicious individual sitting in the Varkhunti area of Palghar. Acting on the tip-off, teams from the local police station and the Local Crime Branch immediately rushed to the location and detained the suspect.
After being taken into custody, Mule was transported to Palghar Rural Hospital, where doctors administered preliminary medical treatment. Medical personnel later declared his condition stable, allowing police to proceed with further legal action and questioning.
Police have since formally arrested the accused and launched a detailed investigation into the case. Officials said they are examining all aspects of the alleged relationship, including any previous disputes, communications, and circumstances that may have contributed to the attack.
Investigators are also gathering witness statements and reviewing available evidence from the area to establish a complete sequence of events. The probe remains ongoing as authorities continue to determine the exact motive behind the assault and prepare further legal proceedings against the accused.
