A major breakthrough was achieved by the Ghaziabad Police on Saturday morning when they arrested Gaurav Nagar, a wanted criminal carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, following an encounter in the Loni area. Nagar was allegedly involved in the kidnapping and murder of Omkar Singh and had been evading arrest for a considerable period. The operation resulted in his capture after an exchange of fire with police personnel, during which he sustained injuries and was subsequently taken into custody.
According to police officials, the operation was initiated after they received specific intelligence from an informer regarding Nagar's movements. The information suggested that the accused was travelling from Banthla towards Chirori and could be intercepted if immediate action was taken. Given his status as a wanted criminal and the seriousness of the charges against him, police teams quickly mobilised to act on the tip-off.
Acting on the intelligence, the Loni Police established a checking operation near the canal located on the Banthla-Chirori road. Officers positioned themselves strategically in the area and began monitoring approaching vehicles in anticipation of the suspect's arrival.
During the operation, police noticed a white Swift car approaching the checkpoint. When officers signalled the driver to stop for inspection, the individual allegedly ignored the instructions and attempted to flee the scene. This immediately raised suspicion and prompted police personnel to pursue the vehicle.
A chase ensued along the roadway as police attempted to intercept the fleeing car. According to officials, the pursuit continued for some distance before the vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed into a tree situated on the roadside. The collision brought the car to a halt, but the incident did not end there.
Police stated that after the crash, the accused emerged from the vehicle and allegedly opened fire on the police team while attempting to escape on foot. Faced with gunfire, officers responded in self-defence and returned fire. During the exchange, Nagar sustained gunshot injuries to both legs, which prevented him from fleeing further.
Following the encounter, police personnel secured the area, disarmed the accused, and took him into custody. He was immediately shifted to a hospital for medical treatment, where he remains under supervision while receiving care for his injuries. Authorities have stated that legal proceedings related to the case are continuing alongside his treatment.
During preliminary questioning, the accused identified himself as Gaurav Nagar, the son of Gajraj and a resident of Badalpur village under the jurisdiction of Badalpur Police Station in Gautam Buddh Nagar district. Investigators subsequently confirmed his identity and verified that he was the individual wanted in connection with the kidnapping and murder case.
Police officials stated that Nagar is a key accused in the kidnapping and murder of Omkar Singh. According to investigators, he and several associates allegedly abducted Omkar before later murdering him. The accused is further alleged to have disposed of the victim's body in the Ganganaar area along Meerut Road in an attempt to conceal the crime and evade detection.
The seriousness of the allegations had led authorities to announce a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to Nagar's arrest. His capture is therefore being viewed as a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping and murder case.
A search conducted following the arrest led to the recovery of several items from the accused. Police seized the white Swift car that was being used by Nagar at the time of the encounter. In addition, officers recovered a .32 bore pistol, two live cartridges, and two spent cartridges that were allegedly used during the exchange of fire.
Investigators are now examining the recovered weapon and other evidence to determine whether they are linked to any previous criminal activities. Forensic examinations may also be conducted as part of the broader investigation.
According to police records, Nagar has a substantial criminal history and is involved in multiple cases across the National Capital Region. Officials stated that approximately half a dozen criminal cases have been registered against him at various police stations. These cases reportedly include serious offences, making him a known figure to law enforcement agencies in the region.
The successful operation was carried out by the Loni Police team, whose members acted on the intelligence input and executed the interception plan that ultimately led to Nagar's arrest. Senior officials have described the operation as an important achievement in the effort to apprehend wanted criminals and strengthen law enforcement in the region.
The arrest is expected to provide investigators with valuable information regarding the kidnapping and murder of Omkar Singh, as well as the activities of Nagar's associates who may still be at large. Police are continuing to question the accused in an effort to uncover additional details about the crime, identify other individuals involved, and gather evidence that can support further legal action.
