Do I have anything to conceal? Mamata goes to help her nephew when Abhishek denounces the search at home

A dramatic series of political and legal developments unfolded in West Bengal on Saturday as Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee found himself at the centre of fresh controversy following a lengthy police search at his Kolkata residence. The operation, which lasted for more than four hours, added to the mounting pressure on the TMC leader, who is already facing ongoing investigations, court scrutiny, and criticism from within his own party.

The situation began in the early hours of Saturday when teams from Shalbani Police Station in Paschim Medinipur, accompanied by personnel from the Kolkata Police, arrived at Abhishek Banerjee's residence in the Kalighat-Patuapara area of Kolkata. The operation reportedly commenced shortly after 3 a.m. and continued for several hours as officers conducted searches inside the property.

According to sources, the police action was linked to an investigation involving Sumit Roy, who is widely regarded as a close aide and personal assistant of Abhishek Banerjee. Officials reportedly examined various parts of the residence while police personnel maintained a presence around the premises throughout the operation. Central security forces were also deployed outside the residence during the search.

After emerging from the residence, Abhishek Banerjee publicly questioned the purpose and necessity of the operation. Responding to reporters gathered outside, he challenged investigators to explain the rationale behind the search and appeared to reject suggestions that any incriminating material would be found at the location.

In one of his sharpest remarks, Banerjee questioned whether investigators believed he had hidden anything inside the residence and suggested that questions regarding the search should be directed to the agencies conducting it. He also alleged that authorities had broken open locks before entering the property and proceeded to search every room within the house.

His comments reflected visible frustration with the operation and appeared aimed at shifting attention toward the conduct of investigators rather than the allegations being examined. The remarks quickly attracted political attention and became a major talking point throughout the day.

The police operation also triggered an immediate reaction from TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. Upon learning about the search, she reportedly rushed to her nephew's residence. Sources indicated that she spent some time inside the property before departing, a move widely interpreted as a show of support during a politically sensitive moment.

Her prompt arrival highlighted the significance of the operation within the party and underscored the concerns surrounding its potential political implications. The visit also fuelled speculation regarding the broader impact of the investigation on the Trinamool Congress leadership at a time when the party is already grappling with multiple challenges.

While Abhishek Banerjee publicly dismissed suggestions that his aide was being sheltered at the residence, officials did not immediately disclose detailed information about the case that prompted the search. As a result, questions remained regarding the specific evidence investigators were seeking and the exact nature of the allegations involving Sumit Roy.

Reacting strongly to the developments, the Trinamool Congress criticised the police action and accused authorities of engaging in a political vendetta. Party leaders argued that the operation reflected a broader pattern of targeting opposition politicians and alleged that investigative actions were being used for political purposes.

Saturday's events came just days after Abhishek Banerjee spent nearly six hours being questioned by the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the Assembly signature forgery case. That investigation has become one of the most significant controversies facing the Trinamool Congress in recent months.

The case centres on disputed documents related to appointments to key positions in the West Bengal Assembly. Investigators are examining allegations that signatures on certain documents may have been forged. Although the Calcutta High Court granted Banerjee interim protection from coercive action, it also directed him to cooperate fully with investigators.

As part of the ongoing inquiry, CID officials questioned Banerjee extensively regarding the disputed documents and related procedures. Investigators have reportedly issued further summons as the probe continues, indicating that the matter remains far from resolved.

The legal scrutiny surrounding the party extended beyond Abhishek Banerjee. While attention remained focused on Kalighat, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) simultaneously conducted searches at multiple locations linked to senior TMC leader and MLA Madan Mitra.

The searches were carried out as part of a money laundering investigation connected to the alleged municipality recruitment scam. ED officials reportedly raided seven locations associated with Mitra, including his residence in Dakshineswar and other linked premises.

According to investigators, the probe concerns allegations of irregular appointments within municipal recruitment processes. Authorities suspect that more than 125 appointments may have been made improperly and are examining claims that bribes were collected through intermediaries. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are continuing to gather evidence.

These legal developments have unfolded alongside increasing signs of internal discord within the Trinamool Congress. One of the most visible manifestations of this tension has been the public disagreement between Abhishek Banerjee and senior TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee.

Earlier in the week, Kalyan Banerjee launched an unusually direct attack on Abhishek Banerjee, accusing him of arrogance and holding him responsible for the party's current difficulties. His comments generated considerable attention because such public criticism from a senior party leader is relatively rare within the Trinamool Congress.

However, subsequent developments suggested an attempt at reconciliation. Abhishek Banerjee responded by stating that Kalyan Banerjee had every right to criticise him. Shortly afterwards, Kalyan softened his own stance and described Abhishek as being "like a son," while calling for unity within the party.

Despite these conciliatory remarks, the episode highlighted underlying tensions that continue to exist within sections of the organisation. Political observers have noted that internal disagreements have become increasingly visible following the party's recent electoral setbacks and the growing number of legal challenges facing several of its leaders.

For the Trinamool Congress, Saturday's developments represented far more than a routine police search. The simultaneous investigations involving multiple senior leaders, the involvement of major law enforcement agencies, and the ongoing internal disagreements have combined to create a period of intense pressure for the party.

Abhishek Banerjee's public confrontation with investigators, Mamata Banerjee's swift intervention, the continuing CID inquiry, the Enforcement Directorate's actions against Madan Mitra, and the lingering fallout from internal disputes all point to a political landscape that remains highly volatile.

With additional summons expected, investigations continuing to expand, and factional tensions yet to be fully resolved, the events witnessed on Saturday may prove to be another significant chapter in the evolving political and legal battles shaping West Bengal's political future. The coming weeks are likely to be crucial as investigators pursue multiple cases and the Trinamool Congress attempts to navigate one of the most challenging periods in its recent history.
