Elon Musk-owned social media platform X experienced a major global outage on Monday, temporarily disrupting access for thousands of users worldwide and preventing many from loading feeds, posting content, or using core features of the service. The disruption was widely reported across regions, with users encountering issues such as blank timelines, failed logins, app crashes, and repeated error messages prompting them to reload the page.
Outage monitoring site Downdetector showed a sharp spike in complaints shortly after the disruption began, with reports peaking at over 35,000 at one point and remaining elevated for several minutes afterward. The data indicated that the mobile application was the most affected component, followed by feed and timeline loading issues, while a smaller share of users reported problems accessing the website itself. Many users turned to alternative platforms to confirm the outage, highlighting its widespread impact.
The platform did not immediately issue a detailed explanation for the disruption, and the full scale of affected users and recovery timeline remained unclear in the immediate aftermath. However, tracking data suggested that the actual impact could be significantly larger than reported figures due to the nature of user-submitted outage reports.
The incident also coincided with reports of disruptions on other internet services, including Cloudflare, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Reddit, and Robinhood, pointing to a broader strain across parts of the internet infrastructure ecosystem. Cloudflare acknowledged elevated error rates and latency across some services during the same period, though no direct connection between the outages was confirmed at the time.
