Imtiaz Ali responds to demands for Punjab's Main Vaapas Aaunga to be tax-free

As Main Vaapas Aaunga continues to gain momentum at the box office, driven by strong word-of-mouth, director Imtiaz Ali has addressed growing demands for the film to be made tax-free in Punjab. The period drama, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina, explores a love story set against the backdrop of Partition and its impact on Punjab.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, the 55-year-old filmmaker said the request for tax-free status was worth considering. He noted that many people see the film not just as a Punjabi story, but also as one connected to India and other regions affected by Partition.

He added that if there is a genuine sentiment of national interest behind the demand, there is a formal process through which states can evaluate whether a film should be granted tax-free status.

Imtiaz Ali also spoke about the storytelling approach of the film, saying it was always intended to be told through the intimate perspective of its central character, Keenu, played by Vedang Raina. He explained that the narrative focuses on the character’s personal experiences, memories, and emotional journey across the border in search of love.

The film, released on June 12, had a modest opening but has since seen a resurgence in collections, supported by positive audience feedback.

Despite competition from new releases like Cocktail 2, Main Vaapas Aaunga has continued to perform steadily and is expected to maintain strong momentum into its second weekend.
