The southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across much of India on Thursday, August 6, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall and isolated heavy to very heavy showers over several parts of north, east, central and southern India.
According to the IMD's forecast issued on Wednesday, August 5, multiple active monsoon systems will continue to influence weather conditions, resulting in sustained rainfall across large parts of the country.
North India to receive more rain
Widespread rainfall is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand, while East and West Uttar Pradesh are also likely to witness fairly widespread to widespread showers.
The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 6.
Uttarakhand is expected to experience particularly intense rainfall, with isolated places likely to receive very heavy showers during August 5 and 6.
Further east, Bihar is likely to continue receiving widespread rain, while isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Thursday.
Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha may also witness heavy rainfall, with isolated locations in both states expected to receive very heavy showers on August 6.
Active monsoon to continue over central and western India
Central India is also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions.
West Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on August 6, while East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are expected to witness fairly widespread to widespread rain.
Along the western coast, isolated places in Konkan and Goa could receive very heavy rainfall. Parts of Maharashtra are also likely to experience very heavy showers.
Rain activity is expected to remain fairly widespread across Konkan and Goa over the next few days.
Southern states to witness widespread showers
Kerala, along with coastal and interior Karnataka, is likely to continue receiving fairly widespread to widespread rainfall.
The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rain over Kerala and coastal Karnataka on August 6, with very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in Kerala.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected over parts of southern India.
According to the IMD, the prevailing weather pattern is being driven by the monsoon trough and several cyclonic circulations affecting northern and central India, including systems over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and parts of southern Karnataka.
These weather systems are expected to maintain abundant moisture and keep rainfall activity high across much of the country.
Overall, the monsoon is expected to remain active on August 6, with widespread rain likely across north, east, central, west and southern India.
