Ajith Kumar has spent decades entertaining fans on the big screen, but away from films, he appears equally at ease behind the wheel. The trailer for Gladiators: In Pursuit of Challenges, released on Saturday, puts Ajith the racer at the centre of attention and explores his long-standing passion for motorsport.
This is far more than Ajith simply taking a car out for a drive. The four-minute trailer offers a glimpse into his life as a professional racer, featuring roaring engines, challenging circuits and the intense pressure that comes with high-speed competition.
Ajith has always been open about his passion for motorsport. However, Gladiators gives viewers a deeper insight into what keeps drawing him towards the racetrack. Speaking about racing with the affection of someone pursuing a lifelong passion, he describes it as “a beautiful sport” that he loves.
The trailer also highlights that professional racing involves much more than simply pressing the accelerator.
Endurance racing, especially, requires stamina, concentration and considerable mental strength. The documentary explores this aspect of the sport, showcasing the preparation and discipline needed to continue performing once the initial excitement of racing fades.
Ajith is shown taking on demanding tracks, while members of his racing team discuss his journey. Several prominent figures from the motorsport world also appear, including Narain Karthikeyan, India’s first Formula One driver, who shares his views on the world Ajith has chosen to pursue alongside his acting career.
The documentary also moves away from the usual superstar portrayal. Gladiators focuses less on Ajith the actor and more on the individual who willingly climbs into a racing car and embraces the physical and psychological challenges of the sport.
The trailer also explores his perspective on success and failure. For Ajith, the excitement seems to lie in the pursuit itself — testing his boundaries, accepting the next challenge and discovering what happens when he gets behind the wheel.
However, just as Gladiators appears set to focus entirely on engines and adrenaline, the trailer takes a different turn.
Ajith’s wife, former actor Shalini, also makes a rare appearance in the documentary, nearly 20 years after leaving acting. Their children, Anoushka and Aadvik, are featured as well. Shalini speaks about Ajith’s determination and his attitude towards failure, while their children provide a glimpse of their father away from both the racetrack and film sets.
Composer GV Prakash Kumar has also revealed that the documentary’s original soundtrack, Born to RACE, will be released soon. He described the project as a special experience for Ajith’s fans and thanked them for the response to the music heard in the trailer.
Directed by Vijay, known for films such as Deiva Thirumagal and Saivam, Gladiators: In Pursuit of Challenges explores the side of Ajith that exists beyond his life in cinema.
